Restoran De' Champion Duck, Bandar Menjalara

When Jane told me about the drunken duck, I was very keen to try it within the same week. But she said we need to order the duck in advance, walk-in was just too risky, since De' Champion only prepare a limited number of drunken ducks per day. Never did I expect that it took us almost 5 months to finally arrange to eat at De' Champion...
De' Champion restaurant serves 3 types of duck, De' Champion Roast Duck, Drunken Duck and Herbal duck.
Since there was only 3 of us, we only managed to try 2 of the 3..
We obviously had the piece de resistance, the Drunken Duck (RM52 for whole duck)
As the name suggested, this duck was marinated and served with chinese wine. The skin was thin and crisp, while the duck meat was tender and wonderfully infused with light, herbal flavour. The base of the plate was filled with the aromatic alcohol and we were each given a small serve of the sauce too. The alcohol tasted very much like brandy, but the lady boss confirmed that it's actually a wine ordered from China. Very addictive (even if you're not a drinker :p), this dish does get a tad overwhelmingly rich at times, the sides of cucumber serves well to clear the palette.
De' Champion Roast Duck (RM16 for quarter) was recommended by the lady boss.
Since this was their popular dish, we had to try. The duck was plump, but the skin, compared to it's drunken counterpart, was not crisp at all. The sauce was slightly herbalish, skewing towards sweetish aftertaste. My vote still goes to the drunken duck.
WF, who absolutely loves char siew, had to order a small portion of Honey Char Siew (RM16)
The fatty char siew was rather divine- the fats melt in my mouth almost immediately while the meat was extremely tender too. The coating of the char siew was pretty sweet, since it is, after all, Honey char siew.
Overall, an enjoyable brunch, I'll definitely pop by again.
Restoran De' Champion Duck is located at 10, Jalan 3/62D, Medan Putra Business Centre, Bandar Menjalara, KL.

Jalan Bunga Raya, Melaka

How was your weekend break?
Had good rest or went out food hunting....like me? :p
Did an overnight trip to Melaka with my uni mates- they missed the food in Melaka and guess the time was right..all of us could make it for the food crawl.
We didnt want repeats of last year's eats, so we decided to check around town for other delicious food that we have heard, but have yet to try.
We found 2 tasty treats at Jalan Bunga Raya, so I decided to have it in one post.
Reached Melaka brunch time, we stopped by Yung Lai Siang for nyonya laksa..
The weather was cool, slight drizzle- makes an excellent match for piping hot nyonya laksa.
Yung Lai Siang's version looks thick, yet when I stir it, the soup seems diluted. But dont be fooled by the watery looking soup, it was flavourful and rich- the santan aroma was well balance and not too heavy. For RM3, we got noodles topped with prawn, see ham, bean curd, bean sprouts and lots of deep fried beancurd skin (which was tasty once soaked into the nice broth). Very satisfying indeed. I prefer YLS's version better than Donald and Lily's.
Yung Lai Siang also serves prawn noodles (RM3)
Average tasting noodles, better option would be the nyonya laksa.
Wash down the meal with a hot cup of kopi..
Smooth, not too thick and didnt leave any tartness in my mouth.
Granpa's curry puff sold at the shop was purportedly good, so we tried..
Nope, it was those sweet, sambal curry that I didnt like. Potatoes were soft though.
A couple of roads away, we looked for the first char siew- roasted pork stall in Melaka.
Our clue was it's the first stall in the lane- but when we reached, there were 2 stalls at the front of the lane.
Hmmm, should I try the left or the right stall?? Both serves char siew and roasted pork..
What other clues??
Cracked my head a lil and I recalled they serve lung yoke too- so I only found 1 stall (the one on the right) preparing that specialty :D
We tried the char siew, roaste pork, lung yoke and home made sausages..
The char siew was unlike those melt in mouth ones you get in Klang Valley. Theirs were compact, mostly lean meat. The interesting part was the exterior, marinated and barbequed to that texture and flavour of bak kwa while the centre was definitely fresh pork. The guys loved it.
While Andrew and Francis thought the roasted pork was normal, WF and I enjoyed it..
Again, dont expect melt in mouth, this roast pork was served cold, but compact with distinct layers of fat, meat, fat and slightly burnt but ultra crackling skin. Very old school of preparation but brought back wonderful memories :)
The lung yoke and homemade sausages..
My mum cooks lung yoke, but her version was different from what was being served here. The auntie explained that their lung yoke is prepared by mincing pork, liver and fat together- compressing it into flat patties and slowly roasted like char siew. Looks very much like bak kwa, the lung yoke was thicker in slice, darker in colour and had a distinct aftertaste of liver when I took a bite. I liked it as I always enjoy pork liver. :p
The sausage on the other hand, reminds me of a chewy, waxed sausage. It was pretty nice, but some of my friends thought it was just ok.
The barbeques meat rice was served with curry sauce and slightly spicy bean sauce. An interesting side sauce but I'd prefer my rice plain to savour the flavours of the roasts.
The char siew-roasted pork stall is located at Medan Makan Boon Leong (lane), of Jalan Bunga Raya, Melaka.
Yung Lai Siang is located at Jalan Bunga Raya Pantai, Melaka.

Chan Weng Kee, SS2

Amy was craving for Ho Weng Kee some months back- and we decided to pop over to SS2. But to our surprise, Ho Weng Kee was no longer there, but taken over by another wantan mee shop called Chan Weng Kee.
With her cravings doused, we went somewhere else for lunch instead...
One fine day recently, Amy suggested to try Chan Weng Kee- she was craving for wantan mee. With or without Ho Weng Kee.
The shop was still packed with patrons, a rather good sign that the wantan mee should still be good..
Amy and WF had the wantan mee with char siew and pork wantan..
The wantan noodles were springy and had a firm bite to it. The char siew and wantan was quite nice- the char siew was not melt in mouth though, but chunky, solid ones. Still quite tasty nonetheless. I prefer Ho Weng Kee's sauce base though, something was lacking in Chan Weng Kee's, making it less aromatic.
I had the beef brisket noodles..
The wantan noodles had the same springy consistency, while the beef was tender to the bite. The brisket was ok though I felt that the beef tendon was overcooked- it was sticky and soft, rather that the slightly bouncy texture that I prefer. I find the star anise flavour over powering too, dominating the beef and sauce flavours.
We shared a plate of roast pork and char siew..
For me, the roast pork was better than the char siew, the skin was crackling, the meat was firm yet had the subtle flavours from the spiced marination.
Overall, CWK's noodles were definitely decent, but I still prefer HWK's.
Chan Weng Kee is located at No 32, Jalan SS2/66, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Choon Yien Chicken Rice, Seksyen 17, PJ

Choon Yien chicken rice is very popular amongst those working at/nearby Seksyen 17, so going over there on a weekday is not a very smart choice.
We popped by on a saturday; still crowded but very manageable.
Though we were there just before lunchtime, it was nearly full house..and there was only 1 miserable chicken hanging at the stall..
Oh no, no more!!!!
Nah, they freshly fry their chooks, so you wont see rows of fried chickens...they keep selling and frying, Gary explained..
Nonetheless, Gary ordered quickly...while we waited...
The famed chicken..
Cut in a rather huge chunks, I felt rather barbaric eating it.
And what so special about this chicken? Definitely the chicken skin.
The chicken was deep fried; the skin so thin and crisp that it's very similar to eating roasted duck skin. Fragrant and lovely to bite into. Sinful too :p. The chicken meat was dry at some parts though, but was ok eating it with the bed of beansprouts it's served on.
Some char siew...
If you like solid porky char siew, then you'll enjoy Choon Yien's version. The fatty parts were not those melt-in-mouth, but springy type. Enveloped with sweeter, non sticky char siew sauce, this was decent char siew.
Some sour spicy vegetables to balance the oiliness from the meat..
Just average, but good to whet the appetite and as an alternate between those meaty chomps.
Gary's complementary 'spare parts' from the owner..
I didn't try it, but Gary seems happy eating it..
Choon Yien chicken rice is located at Block C, Happy Mansion, Jalan 17/13, Petaling Jaya. Oh, do note that the owner is sometimes eccentric and arrogant. Some people may find it offensive. That aside, just enjoy the fried chicken rice.

Spring Golden Restaurant, Shah Alam

Very, very old post....I was at Spring Golden Restaurant a few months back.
My brother wanted to introduce to me another char siew place in Shah Alam. Since we went to Meng Kee, I wonder where we'll go this time..
When we parked right in front of the restaurant, I exclaimed Oh, we are eating at Spring Golden!
My brother looked so disappointed that I almost laugh out loud. I've never tried before, just that I've read in WMW's blog before, I assured him.
We had some dumplings and wantans to start the meal..The dumplings were large and the filling had a nice spring to it. The wantans were even lovelier than the dumplings as the filling was a tad different. Yummy yummy. Most unfortunately, I've forgotten to take the picture of the wantans :(.
We had some roasted pork and roasted duck..Both are average. Roasted pork was somewhat dry though the skin was crunchy. The duck was ok, I find the skin not fragrant enough.
And the star...char siew..
It's called crystal char siew as the char siew is coated with a thin layer of crisp caramel. We ordered the pun fei sau, but were served lean instead. Not as tender as Seremban favourites, but delicious nonetheless.
Spring Golden Restaurant is located at 3, Jalan Peniaga U1/34, Hicom Glenmarie, Industrial Park, 40150 Shah Alam, Selangor.

Meng Kee, Glenmarie

Seems like it's a week of pork fest postings..
Readers who detest pork, please bear with me! ;)
I was at Glenmarie recently, and my brother who's working at that area has been raving about Meng Kee char siew (bbq pork). I recalled Lyrical Lemongrass posting on it too, hence we popped by quickly.
I've only tried Meng Kee's char siew at their HQ (aka changkat tung shin), hence I was expecting something of similar quality...
We were promptly served with our orders of char siew Sticky, not overtly sweet, fragrantly bbq-ed with the lip smacking marination; I must say that the char siew here is a good as those served in it's HQ. What I love about Meng Kee would be the always warm char siew, whilst many shops serves their char siew cold. I ordered pun fei shou (mixed fatty meat), but most of the char siew we got was rather lean. :(
We also ordered the poached chicken which was quite tasty (though not as good as the char siew). The sauce had this distinctive taste in the sweet salty soy that I can always recognize it being Meng Kee's. Somewhat like it's laced with a hint of lard...haha The bean sprouts, well, I Need to order this, else I'll be very guilty just having meat and more meat. :D
Overall, good stuff, though I must admit, I prefer the one served in changkat tung shin..

Restoran Famous Seremban Favourites, Sunway Mas

Lily and Ryan told me about this place months ago, but I've always forgotten to try it.. The char siew (bbq pork) is purportedly as good as(or better than) Changkat Tungshin's and its a must try.
So one fine weekend when I was with Alicia, we were at Sunway Mas area and was cracking our heads on what to have for lunch and suddenly *ting ting ting*.. the char siew!!!
After looking high and low for the shop (you can easily miss it), we finally found it, yay! :). The restaurant was rather quiet, just 2 tables occupied.. Am starting to doubt Lily's recommendation... :(
We were both very hungry, so we promptly ordered the wantan mee (RM3.50)..
2 huge plates of wantan mee were served to us and by the look of the char siew on the wantan mee, I know I'm gonna enjoy this.. hehehehe
The wantan noodles was yummy, but I still prefer the sauce base served in Ho Weng Kee. The wantan, was ok, filling was average, better than Ho Weng Kee's though. But the char siew, no doubt, is the star. The owner used semi fat pork strips to roast the char siew.. it was well marinated, tender, full of flavour and the exterior was sticky sweet from maltose, but not overly done..yumz... to.die.for..:p .
The artery clogging but to die for char siew..
This char siew was so lip smacking that Alicia and I ordered an extra plate of char siew (RM5). We had a lil disagreement as Alicia wanted lean char siew whereas I wanted the mixed fatty strips type :p.. In the end, the owner served a plate of char siew with 2 strips.. one lean and the other, mixed.. aww, so sweet of him :). I was surprised too that even the lean char siew was very tender and juicy...
The lonely wantans that didnt get much attention...
I noted that Hakka mee seemed to be popular there too.. Quite a lot of people ordered that (yeah, the restaurant filled up while we were eating ..), will try that the next time I'm there. I dare say, I think the char siew here may be better than Changkat Tungshin's (and it's half the price too!)
What Julianne thinks?
Absolutely insanely artery cloggingly yummilicious

Restoran Famous Seremban Favourites is located at 80, Jalan PJU 1/3B, Block F, Sunway Mas Commercial Centre, PJ. Just turn right frm Chan Kee (check this for more directions), drive straight, its located opposite a corner mechanic shop.
