Yong Tau Foo and Chee Cheong Fun, Jalan Kancil, Pudu

I was at Pudu area rather early with Jessica and boss..
Jessica used to work in this area and she suggested to have breakfast at this old school stall that has been serving an array of 'chinese economy breakfast' (keng jai) for years..
Jessica was real quick with her selection...Her plate was filled with YFT, CCF and curry sauce. She looks so satisfied eating this dish, she said she missed eating it since she moved office..
I had a selection of YTF to go with my plate of CCF too..Alas, I was not as impress as Jessica. The YTF were mostly overfried and dried. The brinjal was too oil. Only the plain CCF was ok with the usual sweet spicy sauce.
Jessica ordered something rather interesting..A type of sweet soup, it boiled papaya and pumpkin thong sui. Not much flavour in the thong sui unless you eat the mild flavoured papaya and pumpkin cubes..
Boss wanted to have the bak chang... Looks good with quite a lot of filling..but came out rather tasteless. Think they have forgotten the salt.
The steamed yam cake fared much better..Quite smooth and had bits of dried shrimps in it; though lacking oomph. If you are on who prefers chunks of yam in it, then this will not be your choice.
I spotted something that i have not eaten for over 15 years..
The sweet chinese pancake..A simple pancake with sugar, flour and eggs, I used to have lots of it when I was a kid..One bit and it brought back such wonderful memories. It was quite nice, but boss said it's not fragrant enough.
Overall, I find the food very mediocre; I guess it's a place for quick brekkie..don't expect much on quality.
This YTF and Chee Cheong Fun stall(and a whole load of other chinese breakfast food) is located at Jalan Kancil (corner), off Jalan Pudu. Drive along Jalan Pudu, turn to the small lane on your left just before Maybank (maybank is on your left). Very near to Tong Kee eggtarts shop.

Ipoh Road Yong Tow Foo, PJ

I was thrilled when I drove pass a row of shops at Kelana Jaya and noticed that Ipoh Road YTF had just opened a branch in PJ recently. Alas, with my absent mind; I soon forgotten about this place for a few months...
Until I met Jane, who stays around there; and we decided to pop over after all. It was rather pack when we reached; but we were quickly seated and ordering was prompt..
Waited for a while for our food to be served..
We ordered some stuffed white tow foo (YTF RM0.90 per piece). Visually appealing; guess it stops there? The tow foo was quite smooth, but everything else was bland. The stuffing and the sauce was tasteless. I was disappointed.
We got our assorted YTF next..
Stuffed brinjal is a must for me...The rest were merely sidekicks..heheThis was quite nice, the brinjal was not too mushy nor too oily. Again, the stuffing was rather bland. The rest of the YTF were also mediocre. The sauce in this plate seems thicker; maybe they thickened it with cornstarch..
Some fried foo chook (bean curd roll) and fried sui kow (dumpling).. I think the main branch in Jalan Ipoh serves a much better version..The foo chook here was salty while the sui kow was average (didnt like the fact that I got a unsealed sui kow :( )
The soup sui kow didnt fare that well either.. The sui kow was average though the fishballs were quite good, had a nice bounce to it; but the soup tasted like boiled "flour water". Guess they didnt really make any soup? What I got was just the water used to boil the sui kow and fishballs added with some pepper and vegs?
We ended our meal with paper wrapped chicken (RM3)..This was better; the chicken was juicy and the sauce was flavourful. Pretty good, though I would have preferred the Balakong paper wrapped chicken anytime..
So, would I be eager to return to this place for another meal?
No.
But I would still try it one more time in the future; maybe, just maybe, the chef have forgotten about the salt just for today.
Ipoh Road YTF (PJ Branch) is located at No 1, Jalan SS40/2, People's Park, 47301 Petaling Jaya. From Kelana Jaya LRT station (station on your left), drive down the road for about 200 m. You'll see a row of shops on your left, the YTF shop is at the left corner.

Yap Hup Kee Yong Tau Foo, Pudu

Have you been in a predicament that you want to order every yong tau foo that you set your eyes on?
That you know you should stop piling more YTF on your already spilling plate?

I think I'm under YHK's spell as every time I'm there, I'll do exactly that..hehehe

Mabel introduced YHK to me about 8 years ago, and I've been a fan since...

I decided to bring Bernice recently, knowing that she has never tried YHK YTF before..
I'll usually go to YHK for lunch as there are more YTF choices compared to dinner time. Though YHK is always very pack during lunchtime, ordering is very prompt (just choose the YTF you want at the entrance) and food serves rather fast too.

My default dish would be the very addictive chee cheong fun..

Served with sweet beanpaste sauce and crushed dried shrimps, this dish is so addictive that I had to restrain myself from ordering a second plate (knowing I have over ordered my share of yft..hehe). Though they also serve loh shue fun and other noodles with mince meat, I am loyal to the CCF...
Based on your selection of YTF, they will either deep fry it or cook it with broth..
We had a selection of fried stuff, Bernice gave me free reign to choose the YTFs. Obviously I choose my faves..;) There was the ubiquitous brinjal and fook chook; I'll always have the dogbone (well, that's what it looks like to me ;)) which tasted like fried vegetarian goose; the fried wantan look-a-like (filled with chopped yam, carrots and salted egg yolk) and fried taufoo which is filled with fish paste and salted fish.
For the soupy YTF, we had siu bak choy, stuffed broccoli with fish paste, bitter gourd and porkballs. I love YHK's soup base, using char choy (a type of preserved veg), this is so, so tasty! It goes really well with the YTF and I always make sure that we'll have some broth YTF because of the soup....
Last but not least, I must mention on YHK's fried pig's intestine.I never eat such stuff years ago. I thought it was disgusting. YHK converted me. Though I'm still particular with pig's intestines dishes, this is one dish that I'll devour with relish..
YHK also serve pretty good sui kow (both fried and soup) which you can opt for the normal soup (aka with char choy) or with herbal claypot soup, which is also tasty.. We didnt order that coz minimum order was 5 pieces and we were just too stuffed to eat any more!
Oh, by the way, I find the addition of the ordering bell really handy (compared to 8 years back) as service was really prompt.
So, did I make Bernice a fan of YHK? You guess right, I sure did!

Ipoh Road Yong Tau Foo, KL

Eric was in office recently, we decided to meet for lunch before he moves to his new office..
I didnt wanna think much and asked him for suggestions..
Ipoh Road YTF?
Sure! Why not right?
It was a scorching afternoon and the place is already packed with customers, all busy gobbling down their YTF..
We managed to get parking and seats quite promptly despite the crowd and we ordered..
Fried sui kow and fried foo chook.. both very crunchy, generously filled with fish paste which was rather springy in texture. Dipped in a mixed of chilli and bean sauce, this is one lip smacking YTF!
We also had the usual mix of white tau foo, brinjal, ladies fingers, bittergourd and chilli..All tasted very fresh, huge in portions and served in a thick, saucy broth which goes really well with the YTF. My all time fave when it comes to YTF would always be the stuffed brinjal and Ipoh Road's definitely gets my stamp of approval ;). Also, I like them arranging the YTF prettily before it was serve..
Yes, I'm the weirdo who notices irrelevant things like that..haha
The soup sui kow paled in comparison to it's fried counterpart, the skin was a tad thick. The filling, nonetheless, tasted very fresh..
Pigs that we are, we also ordered paper wrapped chicken. You can skip this. Marination was not very sufficient and the meat was tough! Spare your tummy for other YTFs...have paper wrapped chook at Balakong instead...hehe
What I liked about Ipoh Road's YTF (other than their tasty, huge portions) would be their sauces. Usually, we'll get a slightly diluted chilli and sweet bean sauce. But their version, well, it's thick and tasty. Yumz..Ipoh Road YTF is located at 67, Jalan Segambut, KL. Tel:62526473.
