Peter Hoe, Jalan Hang Lekir

I first heard of Peter Hoe when my colleague went there. And all I heard was it's expensive, the food was not worth it...
Obviously, I didn't have any urge to go there, until recently, when another colleague convinced me to try it.
Peter Hoe mainly is a shop that sells house decors. And tucked at the corner of the shop, was a few tables, which I assume was the 'restaurant'.
The menu was simple, some daily specials on the board (sans the price) and some cakes and quiches at the counter.
There were some choices of pastas, salads and noodles, but my eyes was set on the quiche.
The quiche looks fresh, thick and yummy. There were a few types to choose from..
SL has the Tomato and Chinese Mushroom quiche with salad (RM25)

While I had the Brocolli and carrot quiche (RM25)
So it may seem pricey, but the quiche was  huge, thick, yet fluffy in texture and extremely creamy. Both tasted fantastic, mine was filled with lots of shredded carrots, balancing the eggy cheesy filling perfectly. The crust was mostly soft, with bits of crisp at the edges, which I was fine with.
SL's mushroom, tomato quiche was equally delish, velvety egg filling and aromatic cheese makes this such a rich meal. Luckily the salad was light and fresh, wonderful pairing with the quiche.
I wanted something hot, so I ordered a bowl of mushroom soup (RM16)
It's not the thick, filled with cream types, this was more diluted but had loads of chopped fresh mushroom in it. It was quite tasty I must say, but I found it slightly oily.
I didnt have that bad of an experience actually. In fact, I rather enjoyed my meal there.
So, yes, I would return :).
One word of caution though, do ask for the price of your meal before confirming on the order.

Peter Hoe is located at 2, Jalan Hang Lekir, 50000 KL. It's located above Popular Bookstore, use the side entrance.

Home Made Fish Head Noodle, Kota Damansara

Lazy saturday, a fine morning when I met up with my high school friends..
We went for some 'serious business' before lunch..and when it's time for lunch, Dragon girl suggested fish head noodles. Since it was just a few hundred metres away from our current location, we agreed immediately.. it's always nice to have other people suggesting place to makan :p
The restaurant looks so cheerful and bright; it's has more of a dessert/ cafe decor rather than fish head noodles.
Ordering was prompt, obviously we were here for the fish head noodles; though there were quite a big range of food to select from.
While waiting for the noodles, we decided to order the BBQ pork shoulder special (RM6.30)...
Served like satay skewers, it tasted deep fried rather than BBQed. The pork was well marinated nonetheless; tasted very similar to fermented beancurd marination. Tender and juicy, this was quite good to snack on.
And here's the star..
The deep fried fish head noodles, RM8.50 (you can choose for fish slices too)
It's served standard with 4 big chunks of deep fried fish head, lots of chopped tomatoes, and preserved vegetables (ham choi). The soup had a tinge of orange, different from the usual milky white that we were so accustomed to. This soup was thicker and skewed towards the sour side; I guess the added a lot of plums to their soup base. If you have always like the light, sweet flavours of fish head soup, this might be too strong for your liking. As for the fish head, it had a very crunchy exterior but the meat was sweet, moist and springy; unlike most places which serves dry over fried fish slices.
Abner on the other hand wanted to have rice, hence he ordered the fried rice with shrimps and preserved vegetables (mui choi) RM7.90.

The rice had ok wok hei and the rice was nice and fluffy. I thought the rice would be salty from the preserved vegetables, but surprisingly, the tastes were very light. Good for those who prefers a less heavy flavoured rice.
Home Made Fish Head Noodle is located at 8-1 & 10-1, Jalan PJU 5/5, Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, 47810 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Restoran Tuck Kee, Ipoh

We visited SF and SL's aunt while we were in Ipoh..
Also went around Ipoh town, enjoying the old town's charm..
We didnt know what to do; whiling away time as it was way too early for dinner..
SF suggested for a snack before dinner; so off we went to Tuck Kee..
We had the fried bee hoon..
The fried bee hoon was just right, not to dry nor too wet. It had the aroma from the wok hei and plenty of zhu yau zhar (fried lard). Eat it with their home made chilli sauce, it's scrumptious.

We also had the wat dan hor
When I saw the noodles, I was a tad surprise as it looks more like a huge bowl of thick soup. We could not see the noodles at all, we had to ladle the noodles up in order to take this picture ;).SL told me that years ago, when they were staying in Ipoh, this was the only version of wat dan hor they knew. Imagine their surprise when they moved to other states..where's all the saucy soup? The sauce was thick and fragrant; the noodles, was smooth and just glides down our throat and again, there were lots of zhu yau zhar in this bowl of noodles..
Guess Tuck Kee loves using zhu yau zhar eh? (not that i'm complaining ;p). And if you add their homemade chilli sauce into the noodles, you'll get another new level of flavour altogether..Very tasty too :)
Restoran Tuck Kee is located at the same row as Low Wong ngar choy gai.

Restoran Kong Heng, Ipoh

We didnt have breakfast...
We drove all the way to Ipoh, skipping Bidor and it's delicious woo kok *gasp*
So it was only normal (at least for us) to over order... :)
SF and SL brought us to one of their favourite kaishi hor fun ( flat noodles with shredded chicken) stall which is located in Kong Heng...

But before we managed to tuck into our mains, we were hassled by other stall owners to order food from them..
The satay man promptly placed satays on our table..

Eat eat, calculate later!
There were a range of non halal satays..ie, pork satay, pig intestines satay and zhu hong (pig's blood) satay. I tried one stick; was just okay.

Shot some caffeine into my blood stream..hehe..Had the ever famous Ipoh White coffee..One word: kuat! (strong)
Some mixture of balls..hehe.I meant pork balls, beef balls, beef ligamen balls, etc..Only the pork balls were nice, others was mediocre..
And yes, the kaishi hor fun! Looks so delicious, I cant wait to tuck in :). Taste as delectable as it looks..The noodles was smooth, the prawns fresh and the chicken; very tender. The broth was light and sweet, just pure pleasure slurping it down..
SF likes the chee cheong fun there..something about the red sauce.. ;p. It was quite tasty..

SF ordered this for me to try..She said her dad and uncles likes this..Guess it was not that good that day, it was not crispy and a tad hard. Was suppose to dunk it into the curry soup (served with the meat balls), but it only turned out ok.

After we cleared all the food we ordered, we decided to have the fruit rojak across the street at Restoran Hang Chao. The old lady who serves the rojak presented it in a very interesting manner..The rojak was served without the sauce.. Next, we were given a bowl of rojak sauce each. The sauce was thick and pungent, just the way I like it :). The prawn paste and belacan powder sure makes the sauce real strong smelling; and for an extra kick, add in bird's eye chillies..

Restoran Kong Heng and Restoran Hwang Chao is located at old street town (kau kai cheong) at Jalan Panglima, Ipoh.

Chong Thoong Kee, TTDI, KL

I've been eating here for a few years already.. a usual brunch place for lily and me before we go for sunday shopping. Famed for it's kaishi hor fun (shredded chicken with flat noodles) and poached chicken, Chong Thoong Kee does get pretty packed during lunch time..

Our usual orders would be the noodles soup (we added prawn wantan..kar liu..hehe) Smooth flat noodles, lotsa tender chicken shred, fresh succulent prawns, chopped spring onions and quite lovely broth makes this a satisfying brunch for me :). Prawn wantan mediocre though. Maybe quite a lot of MSG too coz I do get quite thirsty after the meal.. *aiks*
Sometimes, when we are rather carnivoruos, we will add in an order of poached chicken..Smooth chicken skin and springy meat to the bite. I do find the oyster sauce a tad salty for my liking though.. But overall, still a very satisfying meal.

I think I prefer TK Chong's (in Damansara Perdana) poached chicken and noodles better, but if you are around Taman Tun around and ran out of idea on what to eat, do give Chong Thoong Kee a try :). CTK is located next to the Taman Tun Market. Turn at the market (market on your left), take the first left turn. You'll see the shop on your right

Restoran TK Chong, Damansara Perdana

SF told me about TK Chong ages ago, but somehow, luck was never on my side.. It was always closed when we decided to pop over for a meal..:-(
Luck was finally on our side some months back, when we decided to pop over. Though it was a quiet sunday at a quiet area, TK Chong was packed to the brim! Nonetheless, we managed to get seats very quickly and ordering was fast too.
SF had the dry version whilst SL and I ordered hor fun soup..
I usually dont take dry hor fun as I find the oyster sauce too thick and salty.. But TK Chong's version is different..Their oyster sauce was light and aromatic, not salty.. Their hor fun was silky smooth, gliding down my throat as I slurp it down. Top with lots of shredded chicken and prawns, this is one lip smacking plate of hor fun.
The hor fun soup was delicious too. The broth is thick and sweet; the hor fun with it's velvety texture and abundance of shredded chicken, prawns and spring onions, does wonders to the tastebuds.
We had a side of white chicken which was scrumptious! The chicken was so, so smooth; the oyster sauce had just the right saltiness and thickness. I was gobbling this down, guarding it closely, secretly hoping that SF and SL would eat less of this..hehe. If it was served warm, this would be perfect.
Alas, there must be a gripe somewhere..no? Well, it was not that bad, just that the prawn wantan were really mediocre after comparing it to the tasty horfun and white chicken..I would gladly trade this for another dose of horfun..
Restoran TK Chong is located at No. 5-1, Jalan PJU8/51, Perdana Business Centre, Damansara Perdana.

Pork parts noodles, JB

This is a very non halal post.. (obviously from the title ;p)
The above title is actually not the name of the stall, but it dont seem to have any name at all..so..
I was told that this is one special dish that you cant find in other states. Heck, I cant even find it in Kluang! This is a family favourite for SF and SL, they have been eating this for years and after hearing about this for the past few days, I want to try it too :p The concept is simple, all the pork parts are braised in a huge pot. I bet they simmered it for hours, all the parts came out tender and lovely to eat..
Clockwise from top left: Braised eggs and pig's ears(hidden at bottom), pork slices, pork belly and pig's tongue.
Aaahh, I know, you must be thinking, "I've taken this wat. All the pork parts with chilli..".. Yes yes, I thot the same too. Then I got my bowl of kuay teow.. The broth is the braised pork broth. Nope, you dont eat it with rice, this is a noodles dish and all the pork parts are supposed to go with it ;). We ordered pork slices, pig's tongue, pig's ears, pork belly, braised egg and beancurd. I must say that everything is good (but i didnt try the ears though..), all tender and tasty, smothered with loads of lard and oil. The sauce base differs a lil from the norm too, not the usual dark soy sauce mix, but a lighter, salty-sweet version which enhances the pork parts sweetness..Dipped in their homemade chilli, it strikes a perfect balance with the meat.
Nonetheless, I do find the soup base too overpowering, a tad strong on the 'porky' smell (i call it "jum pan sou" in canton) which may put some people off...
What Julianne thinks?
Sinful, yummy but freaking unhealthy.
For pork and pork parts lovers, this is a must (and if you are in JB la..). The stall is located opposite Sekolah Taman Tun Aminah 2. Is in some makeshift zinc/ open food court joined with a row of shops. If you see Restoran Hai Lu, the stall is in front of it. Along Jalan Hulubalang 10 (Honda/Suzuki shop at junction).

Of ducklings and eggs

Took a short holiday to Siem Reap early this month...really gorgeous place (will update Travelogue on the trip)

Being a foodie, obviously I was itching to try the local dishes. But I was warned.. I may get diarrhea due to poor hygiene level -.-"

Nonetheless, we checked out the 'authentic' dishes there and the one that got me was their local balut(is called balut in the Phillipines, I just cant seem to recall the Khmer name for it. Anyone remember?).

Anyways, for those who dont know what balut is, this is what it looks like.
WTF, just an egg what?? What's the big deal, right?
No, actually it's half-egg and the other half is a semi-formed duckling(yup with feathers, head n all intact)...

You eat it with some pepper-lime paste and herbs. Dont taste bad, but nothing fantastic either.. makes me wonder why the locals love it that much!

Of course you can always opt for the more 'normal' local dishes such as...

< Amok Fish, their national dish. You can choose to have the dish with fish/ pork/ beef/ chicken. The dish is soupy, sweet and infused with some local herbs taste....

Khmer Curry , their version of 'curry'..more diluted and too sweet for my liking....

We also tried the stir-fried frogs with lemon grass, limau purut leaves and chillies..the frogs are a tad dry though. :(
The local French baguette with 3 types of pork in it.. the sweet pork (which looks like pate), ham and some char siew pork... topped with shredded cucumber, veg and onions, drizzled with sweet spicy chilli sauce.. yum!
I like this snack... dont know the name, but its some pan-fried spring onion cake. Served with tangy spicy sauce that makes it all the more appetising!
We had this for breakfast one morning.. Yup, they have pork noodles in Siem Reap too. I am always a fan of pork noodles and I must say that this version is pretty good stuff! oishi neh!
Are you hungry now??;p
