Bayu Timor, Taman Megah

I'm craving for fruit rojak, LastoftheDragon exclaimed after our not so strenuous morning swim.
I named a couple of stalls where we could do takeaway fruit rojak but she seemed to have something in mind.
What about Bayu Timor?
Nothing in the deep recesses of my mind could recall that Bayu Timor serves delicious rojak. Since I have not been there for years, why not pop by and rekindle my faded memories of Bayu?
It was a late sunday lunch but the restaurant was still fairly packed.
We chose to seat at a mix of bench and rattan chairs, surrounded by decors and carvings- for the uninitiated, most of the furniture, decor items are for sale in Bayu Timor. So if you like the chair that you sat on, you can actually buy it too :p
Food came surprisingly fast.
The Rojak (RM6.50) serving was super huge..
After my first bite, I finally understood why LastoftheDragon was craving for this particular rojak. The ingredients were very fresh- chopped fruits and vegetables were juicy and sweet (sour for those mangoes :p). The crunchy condiments- fish keropok, fried yau char kuay- were crackling good. Doused with thick, spicy prawn paste and liberal amount of peanuts- I must admit, this was one superb rojak. Excellent value for money too.
I ordered the Indonesian Fried rice (RM19.90 for set meal), since it was only available on weekends.
Again, I was happy with this choice too.

The fried rice had sufficient wok hei, the grains of rice was nicely separated, wrapped in wonderful aroma of the greens and herbs. The sambal was delicious and the chicken was tender and well marinated.

My set was served with some kuihs..Which was the only disappointment in this meal...both kuihs were dry.

Restoran Kong Heng, Ipoh

We didnt have breakfast...
We drove all the way to Ipoh, skipping Bidor and it's delicious woo kok *gasp*
So it was only normal (at least for us) to over order... :)
SF and SL brought us to one of their favourite kaishi hor fun ( flat noodles with shredded chicken) stall which is located in Kong Heng...

But before we managed to tuck into our mains, we were hassled by other stall owners to order food from them..
The satay man promptly placed satays on our table..

Eat eat, calculate later!
There were a range of non halal satays..ie, pork satay, pig intestines satay and zhu hong (pig's blood) satay. I tried one stick; was just okay.

Shot some caffeine into my blood stream..hehe..Had the ever famous Ipoh White coffee..One word: kuat! (strong)
Some mixture of balls..hehe.I meant pork balls, beef balls, beef ligamen balls, etc..Only the pork balls were nice, others was mediocre..
And yes, the kaishi hor fun! Looks so delicious, I cant wait to tuck in :). Taste as delectable as it looks..The noodles was smooth, the prawns fresh and the chicken; very tender. The broth was light and sweet, just pure pleasure slurping it down..
SF likes the chee cheong fun there..something about the red sauce.. ;p. It was quite tasty..

SF ordered this for me to try..She said her dad and uncles likes this..Guess it was not that good that day, it was not crispy and a tad hard. Was suppose to dunk it into the curry soup (served with the meat balls), but it only turned out ok.

After we cleared all the food we ordered, we decided to have the fruit rojak across the street at Restoran Hang Chao. The old lady who serves the rojak presented it in a very interesting manner..The rojak was served without the sauce.. Next, we were given a bowl of rojak sauce each. The sauce was thick and pungent, just the way I like it :). The prawn paste and belacan powder sure makes the sauce real strong smelling; and for an extra kick, add in bird's eye chillies..

Restoran Kong Heng and Restoran Hwang Chao is located at old street town (kau kai cheong) at Jalan Panglima, Ipoh.

Gurney drive hawker food, Penang

Yes, the extremely famous Gurney drive hawkers..
So famous that I dont think I should write about it..
But then again, my camera's with me, my friends are willingly posing the food for me, so, heck, why not? For the benefit of those who have never heard of the hawkers here, well, the Gurney drive hawkers serves local hawker food and the number of stalls there are just amazing! The choices are abundant, but most of the stall's food are just average.
The only food that I crave for when it comes to this place would be the muar chee.. This stall serves one of the best muar chee ( steamed glutinous rice topped with crushed roasted peanuts, sugar, sesame) that I have ever tasted. The steamed glutinous rice are warm and melt-in-your-mouth sort, the peanuts and sugar gives a good crunchy bite to it, while the sesame and fried shallots adds in a lil savoury aftertaste. yumz..
Since I'm already there, might as well eat other stuff too right? ;p..
Hence started my look for the longest-queue-waiting-at-the-stall hunt...
This stall gotta be the winner..Serving all the fried stuff (with some lobak food), the hottest and popular hot seller here is the deep fried chicken skin and fried squids. Didnt try the skin, but we had some squids and some mixture of fried stuff. Was just ordinary, nothing to shout about..
We felt like having rojak so we bought from one of the many rojak stalls there... This one was way too diluted and plain..yicky...
Then I noticed a stall selling pork satay and pork intestine satay. Since I hardly see that in KL, decided to try it too..
2 caucasian walked pass while I was waiting for my orders..
OMG, they eat skewered intestines? They Eat that?
And looked at me as though I'm a freak.. geez, this is no fear factor mate... The pork satay was juicy and sweet. Pretty delicious. As for the intestine, the exterior was slightly crunchy while juicy and chewy on the inside. Quite good, though not as good as those in Muar. Would have tasted better if the kuah satay was tastier..
I've forgotten to take a picture of the grilled cuttlefish we had. That was yummy as it was crunchy and pungent at the same time. Lovely. Do try that.
I didnt take the pictures of the stalls I bought these hawker food from, hope a rough sketch of the map/stalls ( based on my rusty memory) helps? So is there a particular stall you go for at Gurney? Any stall that I should have tried?

Rojak and Or Jien@Swatao Lane, Penang

The mere mention of Swatao Lane, some would say that it serves really good ais kacang ( a local dessert of shaved ice with syrup and red beans), which I did try couple of years back. Guess it didn't made a big impression as all I could remember was the rojak and or jien.
The rojak (local mixed fruit and veg salad) is fabulous here as I absolutely love the sticky prawn paste that goes with the fruits..Of so many fruit rojak I've tried, Swatao Lane's sauce got to be the stickiest..Pungent, sticky and sweet sauce generously poured on the mixed fruits and veg while a blanket of ground peanuts add to the finishing touches to this wonderful snack..They dont serve it with crackers nor crullers though..
Francis's favourite, the or jien ( oyster omelette) was served soon after..Again, Swatao's version is top notch.. Unlike the usual round omelette, this version is somewhat rectangle in shape.. The egg batter is fried till really crunchy, just like eating keropok. The oysters on the other hand, remains juicy and succulent. One bite and you'll ask for more!
Andrew, still feeling hungry (though we just had lunch at another place), ordered a plate of fried radish cake which tasted horrible! Don't order this! This is the Swatao Lane place we went to. Drive from Lorong Selamat (the famous CKT stall on your left) till you reach T-junc. Turn left, and then take the first turning on your right. That's Swatao Lane.
