Whitley Road Big Prawn Mee, Lorong Telok, Singapore

So dinner time was nearing and we were all really hungry from the extremely bad lunch...
Before I could even explore any where nearby for yummies, ES gathered all of us and more or less commanded..
We are having prawn mee...
Everyone was excited, and we were soon walking to this makan place (yeah, it's rather near our hotel) that purportedly serves good prawn mee..
It was already packed when we reached; luckily we managed to get seats. I looked around this small eatery and noted that it had a Makansutra stamp of approval already. So, this meal would definitely be better than lunch....
Whitley Road Prawn Mee had an interesting array of prawn mee choices...
You can have prawn mee served with small/ medium/ large prawns or have it with ribs and prawns or have it with some pork/ pig parts (liver, pig's tail).
Mine was pork ribs prawn mee..
The soup was sweet, from hours of boiling prawn shells and pork bones. To add some spice to it, we didnt get the usual sambal; we were given chilli powder to heat things up. Well, it did give us spicier noodles, but I'm still a sambal-in-my-prawn-mee fan. The prawns were very fresh; the meat was springy and sweet. The pork ribs were tender, but most of the porky sweetness were gone...think it went all into the soup boiling process.
ES decided to have pork ribs noodles..
Not surprising since he's the porkman..haha. Served in the same soup base as prawn mee, his bowl was filled with quite a lot of pork ribs. Oh, he was really fast with the noodles, I took this picture after he started on his noodles. He looked really satisfied when he was done with his noodles. Not a single drop of soup left in his bowl..
Overall, pretty good prawn mee at Whitley's. Nonetheless, call me biase, but I still prefer Malaysia's version of prawn mee :p

Whitley Road Big Prawn Mee is located at 18 Lorong Telok (off North Canal Road). Tel: 65336578. Closed on sunday & public hols.

Berisi Cafe@ Medan Mara, KL

Found this little gem just about 6 months back. I use to walk pass this small eatery a few times, but it never sparked my interest until one day, my boss wanted to eat the kerepek kacang(peanut crackers) sold there.

Mesti cuba mee udang kami lain kali ya. Memang sedap! (You must try our prawn noodles. It's really delicious!) the lady boss told us confidently
We merely nodded, but she did catch my interest :)
We did try it one fine day, and we have been returning for it since...
The owner boasts that their mee udang is as good as the one served in Sungai Dua (famed for the malay mee udang) as they are friends with the Sungai Dua owner and he shared his recipe with the owner of Berisi Cafe.
Though different from the chinese version of prawn noodles, Berisi Cafe's mee udang looks mouth watering nonetheless..
The bowl is filled to the brim with thick prawn stock; cooked with coconut milk, spices and served with a dollop of sweet sambal. It's soup is murky, creamy looking; taste was somewhat sweet, but delicious nonetheless. Prawns are definitely fresh; springy sweet flesh.. My little extra treat would be adding a chunk of bergedil. Berisi Cafe's bergedil is absolutely scrumptious and goes so, so well with their mee udang. Unless you hate potatoes, please add the bergedil (potato pattie).
Berisi Cafe serves 2 other dishes, ie, Soto and Nasi Lemak. If you'd prefer something lighter (in flavour), then their Soto would be your cup-of-tea.. Again, you'll get generous amount of nasi impit at the bottom, topped with loads of shredded chicken ( lady boss told us they use premium quality chooks) and fresh beansprouts. Bergedil is already included in this dish; and once served with their steaming hot soup (sup rempah), you'll better slurp it up quickly. It's a really satisfying dish and if you do want some extra kick to this milder dish, do ask for their chilli..
I didnt take a picture of the Nasi Lemak as I feel that the mee udang and soto outshone it (sorry nasi lemak!). Makes it looks pretty plain next to the 2 stunners..hehe
Berisi Cafe is located Lot 1.10 Medan Mara (just a walk from Sogo Shopping center), Jalan Raja Laut, 50350 Kuala Lumpur. Mobile no: 019- 229 1650.

Prawn Mee@ Sin Kim San Coffeeshop, Penang

I wanted to have the hokkien mee (aka prawn mee) at Jalan Bangkok..
Most unfortunately, it was not open that morning. Francis wanted us to try another famous prawn mee at Jalan Rangoon, when we reached, the stall owner was washing his pots already :-(
Elaine suggested Sin Kim San as she had tried it before, at the other end of Rangoon road.
It was already late in the morning and the weather was rather hot, my urge to have hokkien mee dont seem that appealing anymore...I just wanted to have a cup of cold drink..
Nonetheless, Elaine went ahead and ordered for us while Andrew had charsiew siew yoke rice as his stomach cant take any onslaught of spicy food..
Andrew's rice was served first..
The char siew (bbq pork) was average, a tad on the dry and hard side. I thought the siew yoke (roasted pork) was quite nice, slightly different from those we have in Klang Valley. Their siew yoke was tossed (or did they stir fry?) with dark soy sauce and some sticky sauce (malt sugar?). Maybe I had the crunchy bits and juicy meat, but the texture and flavour reminds me of old style stir fried siew yoke with sugar and dark soy sauce. I like it though andrew didnt..
Soon after, the elusive prawn mee...Eh? What's this? That's not prawn... that's.... mantis prawn!
I am so accustomed to prawn in my prawn mee, so it was a nice change, to see loads of mantis prawns in this bowl instead :-). Dunked in the sambal, give it a good stir and *chomp*! The broth was very sweet, from the prawns (shell) and pork bones. Some of them find it too spicy, though I thought it was just nice. The mantis prawns was very fresh, springy sweet flesh blends well with the spicy broth. There were lots of other ingredients such as sliced pork, shrimps, beansprouts and topped with fried shallots. This combo is delicious and we finished our meal really quickly. And for RM4 per bowl, such value for money!
Sin Kim San Coffeeshop is located at the junction of Macalister and Rangoon road.

Prawn mee@Yon Len, TTDI

What you wanna eat? What you wanna eat? the ever bubbly lily kept asking..
Anything that i've not tried, I replied groggily, still recovering from my lack of sleep, thanks to my druken friends who left my place at 3 am
With that as a prompter, lily launched into a tirade of potential brunch places, while I tried my utter best to concentrate. Vaguely, I heard something about Taman Tun and prawn mee.. I nodded sleepily and the next thing I know, we were walking towards Yon Len.
Sweet lily did all the ordering while I stared blankly into space, my mind did not want to work at all. The weird tasting teh peng (iced tea) did it though, I was wide awake after a sip..hehe
We waited for quite a while as many ordered prawn mee too. Finally, 2 piping hot bowls of prawn mee were served.. Nicely laden with sliced pork, small prawns, kang kung and bean sprouts, I quickly stirred in the chilli paste and took a mouthful..Like I've said before, I'm not a big fan of prawn mee (except for a particular stall in Penang) but Yon Len's prawn mee is actually good. It's the soup that won me over, very sweet yet subtle in flavour, nicely done. In fact, I like this better than San Peng's, the only time I tried San Peng, the soup was a tad salty. Yon Len's was just nice.
Yon Len is also famous for the Char Kuey Teow, which I have tried before. Pretty good (but not fantastic), the wait is rather long though.
What Julianne thinks?
Fuss free and pleasing
Restoran Yon Len (boolicious pointed out that this place is actually called Yong Len..maybe the letter G fell off frm the signboard..hehe..thanks boo!) is located at Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 1, Taman Tun Dr Ismail. Corner shop. Opposite KFC.

Jalan San Peng Prawn Mee

Rolly polly was nice enough to bring last-of-the-dragon and me to KL for prawn mee last saturday.. He said this stall, which has been in biz for a few decades, only opens for breakfast and lunch. As we did not want to be caught in any jam and no parking, we went there for breakfast instead. We were there 9+ in the morning, and there are already a batch of customers finishing their bowls of prawn mee..
We promptly ordered 3 bowls of prawn mee (they served loh mee too, but no one noticed that..:p) and a bowl of pork balls to share...
We got the prawn mee soon after and man, it sure smells good :). The soup was slightly murky, but was very aromatic. Rolly polly liked this version better than PG's as he finds the PG version a tad sweet, whereas he prefers it salty..This bowl of goodness was filled with prawns, chicken and veg.. I actually find the kangkung very yummy.. I think they chose very tender shoots and maybe they did stir fry it a lil before pouring in the broth.. Dragon found the noodles a tad salty though, which I agreed.. Not sure if it's due to the fact that this is our first meal for the day, our tongue is still bland or maybe it's really salty....anyways, its salty la..
The porkballs was ok.. though springy and quite fragrant, I find it a tad salty again..
What Julianne thinks?
Satisfying and effortless
This Prawn mee stall, well, dont think it has a name.. Maybe its called San Peng... (as per the small yellow board hanging at the stall) Anyways, took a shot of the place, just in case you may wanna look for it.. It's facing the no 46, Jalan San Peng shop.Opposite TM building. Off Jalan Loke Yew
