Fei Fei Crab, Kepong

We were told that Fei Fei's attraction was the super cheap crabs served there.
Wondering how cheap was cheap, we decided to pop over recently. It's not too packed, since it's a weekday. We sat down and were given some confusing looking menu- which looks like advertisement write ups, some pictorial menu etc. Since the crabs were the star here, we decided to ordered 3 types to try. Unbeknown to us, there's actually 2 types of crabs, one is a fixed plate of RM18 crabs (we cant choose the amount of crabs we want) and the second type would be the RM50/kilo crabs. Since we were here because of cheap crabs, we decided to order the former.
Dishes were served relatively fast..
We were recommended the 2 flavoured mantis prawns..
The yellowish sauce was called the italian sauce mantis prawns. Not well received, most of my friends comments were that it tasted funny. To me, it tasted somewhat like junk food- twisties/ chacos cheese flavoured mantis prawns. The other flavour, mantis prawns ala thai was more common, but not a fantastic version. Glad that we could at least taste the mantis prawns flesh, it was not overfried crunchy batter.
New to the menu, was the Coconut curry shark meat..
Some of my friends were keen to try this since they have never tasted shark meat before. I've been avoiding shark meat for years, I used to eat it quite frequently during my schooling days (part of catered food menu), and now that I know that the meat has high mercury level, I avoid eating it. My friends really enjoyed it though, I must say, the curry gravy was nice, rich yet not cloying. Goes well with rice.

The Four Heavenly Kings was well executed though..
The vegetables was fresh, sweet and crisp, the sambal had the right level of spiciness and the anchovies added that little crunch for an excellent overall texture.
And the wait was over..our first set of crabs
Crabs in Honey Lemon sauce
The crabs were so tiny!!! Now I know why it's RM18 per plate- the shells were no larger than my palm..sigh..The flavour was decent though, it was sweetish and crunchy- the accompanying sauce was sourish, I guess that's the lemon. Quite nice, but with such tiny crabs, its hard to enjoy.
The next one was also a house specialty, Crabs in Sweet Corn and Buttermilk sauce..
Think you can guess the size of these small crabs by comparing the size of the corns bits with it. The sauce was delicious though, thick, rich cheesy taste, with hints of sweetness from the corn. Mop it up with deep fried man tau (they were extremely generous with the sauce, unlike Wong Poh), excellent stuff. The crabs? Well, again, too small to comment.
Taking a break from the crabs, the long ribs was served..
This was similar to char siew, just that it's served in the form of long ribs. The fatty layers were springy, the meat tender, coated with slightly sticky sauce, it was paired well with their homemade chili. Pretty tasty.
The last order of crabs arrived- Crabs in Kam Heong Buttermilk..
Yes, Fei Fei certainly has some interesting sauces to cook their crabs in. Looks like curry crabs, but it was distinctly creamy buttermilk cooked in spices. I thought the sauce was excellent with mantou but somewhat masks the sweetness of the crabs. Mixed reviews on this, it was my least favourite but MC thought this was the best amongst the 3 flavours.
Overall, I cant complain about the flavours of the dishes here, it's all decent. But guess the smallish crabs was not worth it though. Total bill was RM182 for 7 pax.

Restoran Fei Fei Crab is located at No 7-A Jalan Desa 2/7, Desa Aman Puri, Kepong, 52100 KL.

Hoi Peng Seafood Restaurant, SS2, PJ

Been a while since I last posted..so sorry! Got a special visit by food poisoning, the worst nightmare for foodies :(
~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a gathering for my high school friends, some we didn't meet for a couple of years already.
They wanted seafood and Jo suggested Hoi Peng for the crabs.
Most unfortunately, Jo was sick on dinner day, so we ordered some dishes recommended by the waitress..
We got some fried lala with wine and ginger.. This was tasty as the wine enhances the sweetness of the lala. The ginger and bits of bird's eye chilli added some heat to this dish too.
Some veggies ...we had fu yu yau mak.. It was alright, crunchy veg, maybe slightly salty sauce..
Some stir fried venison.. Usually, I can take gamey meat, but somehow, this venison tasted so gamey, it's rather a turn off. Sad.
Piping hot squids were next..Cooked spicy and sourish, I liked this. The squids were springy and the tangy assam complements it wonderfully.
And finally, the star of the night...
Sweet spicy flavour..
We had some large crabs which is succulent and juicy.The sauce was thick; sweet and rather spicy hits us at the same time, were lovely with the crabs. And of course, the hot man taus to mop up the sauce..
The salty crabs..
I loved this. Though some of them said it was a tad salty, I find it very fragrant...reminds me of seaside..heh, just exaggerating..But seriously, tasting the salty shells and then biting into those sweet, juicy flesh does bring a smile to my face. Easily satisfied, hoh?
Total bill was RM348. I find it a tad pricey. Crabs were already RM201.
Hoi Peng Seafood Restaurant is located at 30, Jalan SS2/24, 47300 Petaling Jaya. Tel: 03-78742199. As it gets rather packed during weekends, it's better to make reservations.
Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant, Taman Bukit Mayang Emas
Sometimes, when we are so focused on our routine, creatures of habit that we are; we tend to ignore some new things around us.
Super Crab Aroma is located just next to Wong Poh; the famous restaurant serving creamy butter crabs that I've always patronised..
While Wong Poh's tables were all occupied, Super Crab's just had a few table of customers. Heck, I never even noticed it's existence...
Are you sure This is the restaurant Ryan said? I asked Lily as we walked towards the restaurant.
Yes, she whispered, her eyes darting left and right, reassuring herself that it's the right restaurant. Ryan and his friends were running late, we were supposed to meet him here.
So in we went and the friendly owner ushered us to a table.
Ordering was quick as Ryan already recommend some dishes to us..
Must remember to order the stir fried octopus with chilli, Lily has been muttering under her breath when we were driving there..
Obviously, that was our first order..Am very glad she did. This was utterly lip smacking! The baby octopus had this wonderful texture; springy and firm sweet flesh. Not chewy at all. Stir fried with cili padi (bird's eye chilli), garlic and crunchy dried shrimps, this is scrumptious and very addictive. Had to refrain myself from finishing this dish before Ryan and friends arrives..sigh..
Didnt want to have rice, we decided to order fried thong fun instead As this dish had good wok hei, we enjoyed this very much too. Again, I need to refrain myself from eating too much as I still need to save tummy space for crabs. The dudes had fried rice, which I did not manage to take a picture of..they were so hungry that they attacked the fried rice the moment it was placed on the table.. *tsk tsk..where are your manners guys?hahaha*
Some vegetables to balance out our diet..Hehe..Fresh, crunchy, sweet veg. Tasty.
Finally, the star of the night..Crabs..We had the sweet and spicy crab..This was one huge crab, very fresh; the flesh was so succulent, sweet and juicy. The crab meat was so thick that it's really enjoyable sinking my teeth into it. One of the best local crabs I've tried so far.
And some fried man tau to dunk into the sauce. Delicious.
My fave for the night..The nai yau hai (butter milk crab). Thick, creamy, fragrant sauce enveloping the crab. My first taste of the sauce and I'm in heaven. The creamy sauce, the hint of curry leaves, the bits of garlic works wonders to the palate. I dare say, this sauce is better than Wong Poh's *gasp*.
And they are generous with the sauce, we dont need to ask for extras. At Wong Poh, the sauce is so measly, we'd always end up asking for extras and they'll always charge us for that..hhmmpphh
Our total bill was RM200 for the 5 of us. The 2 crabs weight about 2.5kg, at RM55/kg, is rather costly. But it's one that I'll willingly pay for.
Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant is located at 40, Jalan BM 1/2, Taman Bukit Mayang Emas, 47301 PJ. Tel: 03-7880 9793. Oh, do give them a call if you want to have huge local crabs. Some days, they may only have average sized crabs. I had the Pulau Ketam crabs, which the owner said; it had the most sien flesh.
Seafood Station, Aman Suria
There are some restaurants that you would return to, just for that one dish.
Got that sort of restaurant in your list? ;)
Seafood Station is one of those for me. Went there for CNY this year, was not impress with most of the dishes, except for, nope, not one dish, but a type of seafood..
Crabs, that is.. :)
Ever since we tasted the delicious crabs served there, we have been returning over and over again..
Not that I'm saying that other dishes are bad, those were just average and really paled in comparison to the crabs.
But for varieties and fillers (yes, I have frens who wont get full by just eating crabs ;p), we had some country style fried rice.. which was ok, if not, a tad salty..
Some Portuguese champagne chicken.. which tasted suspiciously like marmite+Guinness chicken. Pretty good.
Some vegetables for good digestion..hehe.
And the highlight for the night, the crabs..
Seafood Station serves meat crabs, I was told that it's Sri Lankan meat crabs. Usually, the sizes of their crabs starts from medium sized crabs, which is about 1kg for one crab. Nonetheless, do call and check with them as I was there once and their crab 'harvest' were small meat crabs; it didnt give that much satisfaction compared to medium-large ones..;p
We ordered 2 types of cooking style..
The Chilli Crabs (the one we had is a slightly above medium size, but looks huge to us)..Most of my frens love this dish, the sauce is thick and spicy sweet; hint of sambal and crunch peanuts and end with a swirl of raw egg before serving. Goes really well with the mantau (note, sometimes it takes them really, really long to serve the mantau). My fave would always be their Salted egg yolk crab..Just stunning. So lovely that it usually leaves me quite speechless for a while (coz i'm busy devouring it..haha)
Minimum order of crab per cooking style is only one, which I think is a plus point. Total bill was RM140.
Seafood Station is located at H-G-18 Ground Floor, Jalan PJU 1/45, Aman Suria Damansara, 47301 PJ. Tel: 03-78063539.
Seafood Station, Aman Suria
Eric recommended this place for our lou sang before the CNY ends..Since the dishes we ordered are still available in their norm menu, no harm for me writing about this. We had lou sang to start off the dinner. Not sure if it's due to the fact that our table was very near the kitchen, the owner kept coming to our table and fussing over us. In fact, he was the one saying all the auspcious stuff for us while we toss the lou sang..*scratches head*
We ordered some other recommended dishes such as the Tong Poh pork and kailan stir fried with mui choy (preserved veg). We also ordered the salted egg crabs, prawn in cream sauce and special taufoo.
The kailan was quite fragrant, although I could not taste any mui choy, I could see plenty of it. A tad oily.
Taufoo was plain and boring. Dont be deceived by the pretty colours.The Tong Poh pork was served in a claypot, whole slab of fatty pork look pretty sitting there..hehe. Guess this dish was braised for a few hours, the inside was tender yet moist. Pork was sweet, slathered with the thick gravy, this dish goes well with white rice. The sides of the pork was slightly chewy/ coarse though..Next, we had the prawns in cream sauce. The waitress recommended this, and when I see the dish, it's actually nai yau (butter&milk) sauce. Seafood station's version paled in comparison to Wong Poh's (just down the road) version and the fish pond restaurant's(cant remember the restaurant's name). Something was just missing from this dish, cant pinpoint it. The gravy was rather diluted, may be due to the tomatoes they added..
Still feeling the dishes were average, I started wondering why Eric recommended this place.. Could it be the VIP discount card he had? And, I finally know why, when the crabs were serve..This must be one of the better salted egg crab I have tasted. Sooo, sooo fragrant, I really want to go to the kitchen and give the cook a pat on his back ;p. Crunchy fragrant salted egg clinging to the shells, fresh sweet flesh.. time to get my fingers dirty! I truly enjoyed this dish.
Once we have finished every single morsel of crabs, the waiters promptly cleared the table and served us fresh fruits and some fried taiwanese dessert, which was on the house. The owner claimed that it costs SGD1 per 'nugget', but it's on the house here. He explained that inside this 'golden nugget' is the ling kok (water caltrop or horned water chestnut if i'm not wrong), a nut/fruit offered during chinese prayers, though hardly seen in Msia anymore. Jo found this too sweet for her liking. I, on the other hand, thought it was quite nice( you must eat it while it's hot), coated with bread crumbs and nuts, it's fried till golden brown. Inside, it's creamy and rich, from the custard & taro (i think) paste that wraps the ling kok. Interesting stuff, though the owner said this can be easily found in Taiwan..Total bill was RM193, slightly expensive since it was CNY. Guess it'll be cheaper now?
What Julianne thinks?
Top notch for the crabs, average for the rest.
Seafood Station (previously know as Ocean Palace) is located at H-G-18 Ground Floor, Jalan PJU 1/45, Aman Suria, PJ. It's at Aman Suria area (you can come from Tropicana or if with LDP, turn in at the road where Loong Foong is), turn in from Kayu Nasi Kandar, it's next to Maroon Cafe.
Note: I have also tried their Chilli Crab (should be renamed Sambal actually) which was really good with mantau. Spicy too. I also tried the black pepper&salted egg crabs, which was lip smacking, but I prefer the plain salted egg crabs.
