Quan An Ngon, Ho Chi Minh, Part 2

Oh no! Vietnam again?
Bear wih me dude and dudettes..who knows, you might find this useful in the future? ;p
I wrote about it's branch in Hanoi recently...
But Jeffrey said that this main branch has dishes that is not served in Hanoi, so I thought I'd better post on this too..
Quan An Ngon's 'kitchen' basically is placed around the restaurant, cooked in a very open concept. I thot it's a good idea, good way to see them preparing the dishes.
Again, we left the ordering to Jeffrey, who is ever so gracious to play host when we were in HCM.
We had Banh Beo, which is a central region dish. There was a mix of locally made sausage, sticky chewy prawn dumpling and rice balls. Tasty, our favourite was the prawn dumpling.
The dry noodle with assorted meat looks very healthy..I must say, it was nearly oil free. Mix all together and drizzle with the light, sweet, salty sauce, I find this good too :). Simple but tempting in its own way.
The sticky starch soup with pork and crab meat was very interesting. Reddish in colour, the soup was very thick, starchy. It tastes like sharksfins soup, but milder. The noodles, was like a thicker version of laksa. As the soup is rather 'slippery', I had a nice time slurping the noodles..keke
The Pork parts noodles looks very much like the sticky noodles.. But a quick stir of the soup told us otherwise. This soup is spicy, no porky smell at all. Very addictive dish, but as I drink more and more of the soup, it gets spicier and spicier..*sweats* Then theres the balitong cooked in sweet coconut sauce..I didnt like this dish as it was too sweet for my liking. Just rather strange to suck the balitong and the aftertaste was sweet coconut milk taste.
Next was the plain looking glutinous rice with shredded chicken with shallots. Ah, but do not be deceived by this plain jane. This was my favourite, so scrumptious; the soft rice was fragrant, the chicken tender and the shallots added a lovely crunch to the texture. The sauce which is very tasty, makes this simple dish heavenly...
The springrolls was normal though..Just average..
Desserts were tau foo fah I prefer Malaysia's version. This version had some vanilla essence added, tasted awkward with the ginger syrup..Local ton yuen with coconut milk..I still prefer our version. Theirs were a tad too creamy, the glutinos balls was rather chewy...
The black glutinous rice dessert was nice though..had more coconut cream than black glutinous, the combination was lovely..
The colourful drink, i call it the 3 coloured ice, while it's called Jelly Water chestnut, tapioca and coconut milk (quite a mouthful eh?) there..It's like ais kacang..cooling stuff :)..
Total bill was RM40+ which we thought again, very reasonable.
Quan An Ngon is located at 138 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Quan Mot, TP HCM. DT: 8257179. This is easier to find as it's located just across the street from the Reunification Palace.

Ditto what wmw said! I like how the dishes all look so clean and healthy... very crisp and fresh too. If only we get Vietnamese food into our kopitiams and not just in "proper" restaurants here... :P
