Street food, Bangkok
Shall start my Bangkok post with the street food we had for this trip.....
I'm lucky to travel with a group of friends who enjoys food as much as me, so we managed to eat quite a fair bit of street food this time round :). Had some thai fish cakes..This version was more like fish balls...guess it was easier to eat while on the go.
Some grilled meat balls...
Rather bland to eat by itself, you'll need some chilli sauce (unless you wanna eat it with the bird's eye chilli and sliced ginger..)
Some street food are really colourful.. We decided to take the plunge and took a package of the fried quail eggs. Tasted exactly like chicken eggs, just that with loads more cholesterol.. yikes!
The local fried banana fritters..The batter's more fragrant as there's coconut milk in it. Lots of sesame seeds too.
Wanted to try the local ice cream with bread when I saw some locals buying it...
You can choose the ingredients to be in the sandwich...sweet glutinous rice, nata de coco, pineapple cubes..And topped with coconut ice cream. Not that nice though as the ice cream lacks flavour. Was just plain sweet.
Some bite size fried chicken..Crunchy on the outside, the meat was tender and juicy. We had the deep fried prawns too. Not as nice and I've forgotten to take a shot of it..hehe
Tried the thai fried crullers too..Sucky. I prefer malaysia yau char guai.My fave and must have every time I'm in Thailand...The grilled squids...Smokey on the outside; springy, sweet and juicy on the inside. Have it with the ultra spicy and sourish sauce. Delicious.
Grilled chicken..
Tasted somewhat like satay chicken (without the peanut sauce), the chicken was well marinated. Only trouble while eating this was that they didn't debone this chook.
Grilled catfish tasted exactly like those in Malaysia...
Yes, ikan keli. Yummy when we have it hot; the sauce was pretty good too.
This snack was really scrumptious...
There's sweet flavour (with yam bits) and savoury ones with spring onions...
Cooked in halves, it's stuck together when it's almost cook. So we get a sorta flattened 'ball' shaped snack. The center was still creamy and every time we bit into the centre, the warm filling oozes out and it's fantastic!
Lastly, my favourite local ice cream...
Served in half coconut shell, the young coconut flesh was scraped out and topped with very creamy and rich homemade coconut ice cream. The ice cream had bits of peanuts and jackfruit. Real bliss having this. Found this little gem very near Pantip Plaza.
In case you were wondering, no, we didn't eat all of this at one go. We had it in a span of a few days. :p

BKK has the best street food variety in the world, heaps better than Jln Imbi (the I also got one same same prawn mee and chicken wings). and sensational to adventurers like youself ( and we hope , ourselves)
LOL
oh ... Bangkok has an amazing array of food, from the street food, to upmarket restaurants.
nice post, sc!!!
backstreetgluttons: yes, so much street food there, and so little time to eat! hehe
j2kfm: simply adore the food there...miss it already. thanks j2kfm! :)
Wah...i wish i could go there also
-__- Got so many variety of foods.
But how come the grilled meat balls
like that one? I thought it's some rice balls -_-
That's a really cool idea: serving fresh ice-cream in half-shell coconut. I wonder how long before some hawker here picks up this idea too? Hmm....
Salivating at the ice-cream in coconut shell. I have not come across that! Wow.
jerome: am sure you'll get to go sooner or later :p. the meat balls looks kinda weird and not very nice either.
kenny: fingers crossed..but doubt it'll be as nice as thailand's :)
tummythoz: i've never seen such before too until now. really yummy!
I never seen the coconut shell ice cream too. But I had the Cream & Fudge Factory ice cream there (which was much pricier). Real yummy!
Oooh...that coconut ice cream looks good!
Seems like BKK is must place a foodie must go to at least once.
jason: it's rather hard to find, i must agree on that. cream& fudge? where was it? didnt see it wor..

simon: i call it my yearly pilgrimage..hehehe
HI SC
wondering where are the street food stalls located? any in siam square area? also, r they hygienic, esp the ice cream? very tempted to try them but not sure if they r okay to eat, cause can't risk having diarrohea esp when it comes to children..
thks

it's random, everywhere around the city. but not the main street where siam paragon is. smaller lanes. for that many times i've eaten street food in thailand, not once i've gotten diarrohea. fairly save. but, if you dont want to risk it, you can pop over to MBK food court, there's a variety of street food (except for grilled ones) you can try. oh, make sure you go to the higher level food court in MBK- it has 2 foodcourt, one serves expensive international, while the other serves local food. one of the nicest food court in town.
i read from one of your posts that the food hall at siam paragon also sells local street food. r the 2 food courts about the same ie in terms of the type of food offered?
thks

siam paragon is a higher end food court- they have some basic street food snacks- like the fried bananas, coconut cream mini'apam' etc. as for MBK- it's messier, but there's more local food variety there. and it's with air con- kids should be comfortable there.
thks, SC. will see how to incorporate MBK food court into my itinerary.
